The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oakbanum takes its name from two of perfumery's most demanding materials: oak and olibanum, the aromatic resin once traded along ancient incense routes. Abdulaziz Alshaibani built this fragrance around that duality, oak as a modern anchor, olibanum as something older, more spiritual. The cognac opening is the bridge between them. It arrives bright, almost playful, before settling into the woody depth that gives the composition its weight. Oakbanum is the Selcouth answer to anyone who wants warmth without heaviness, luxury without loudness.
The heart of Oakbanum is its boozy register, whiskey, rum, and coffee absolute working in concert. El Salvadorian coffee CO2 extract gives the coffee note a darker, more realistic roast than traditional absolutes, while the whiskey and rum absolute introduce an amber warmth that prevents either from becoming too sweet. Osmanthus adds a surprising floral-fruity nuance that lifts the heart out of pure indulgence and into something more complex. Davana, with its bittersweet, slightly medicinal quality, keeps the warmth grounded rather than letting it float skyward.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are bright and assertive, bergamot, tangerine, and cardamom arrive together, with the Romanian cognac lending a warm, slightly sweet undertone that sets this apart from a standard citrus opening. The elemi resin adds a resinous lift that prevents it from becoming too sweet. By the second hour, the top notes recede and the heart takes over. The whiskey and rum emerge as the dominant players, supported by amberwood and the dark roast of the coffee CO2. Osmanthus adds a fleeting floral-fruity note that surprises you, brief, but unmistakable. By hour three, the base notes are in full command. Oak, sandalwood, and oud form a woody foundation that is rich without being heavy. The oud and olibanum don't compete, they deepen each other, the oud providing animalic depth while the frankincense adds smoke and spiritual resonance. Bourbon vanilla and amber smooth the edges. The drydown holds for another two to three hours on most skin types, intimate and close, projecting modestly throughout.
Cultural impact
Selcouth's Riyadh roots place Oakbanum within a larger movement of Arabian perfumers redefining luxury fragrance for global audiences. The cognac and oak pairing speaks to a deliberate cultural fusion, drawing from Western luxury symbols while grounding the composition in Eastern sensory traditions. The 2025 launch timing matters within the niche fragrance landscape, where boozy-woody compositions have seen renewed interest from regional fragrance communities and Instagram-based reviewers driving awareness through fragrance content channels. While not yet an iconic release, Oakbanum's specificity ensures it carves a devoted niche rather than becoming another broadly appealing luxury scent.
