Why it exists.
The beginning
Santa Maria Novella's I Giardini Medicei collection draws from centuries of Florentine pharmacy heritage. The house has long translated botanical tradition into scent, and Incenso, named simply incense in Italian, embodies that lineage: not a literal incense accord, but the memory of it, dry and contemplative, as if the stone walls of the old pharmacy absorbed centuries of resinous smoke and released it slowly into a single bottle. The composition opens with a quiet intensity, smoke curling alongside warm, resinous undertones that recall the way ancient woods and herbs once permeated those storied corridors. As it settles on the skin, the fragrance unfolds with remarkable subtlety, each note layering into the next like incense smoke drifting through still air.
What makes the composition interesting is its restraint. Incenso doesn't hit you over the head with smoke, it builds slowly, letting the frankincense emerge as the cardamom and pink pepper fade, then settling into a drydown that reads more as memory than performance. The cypriol adds an earthy, almost mineral quality that grounds the warmth without making it heavy. The evolution
