The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Magnolia Grandiflora is a tree that dates back to the prehistoric era. It predates bees and relies on beetles for pollination, a relationship that has remained unchanged for millions of years. This 2023 release takes its name from a tree that has stood in the gardens of Villa Medici di Castello since the 18th century. The fragrance stays true to the magnolia blossom, capturing its fresh, slightly green floral character without introducing modern reinterpretations. The composition allows the magnolia to express itself naturally, giving space to its creamy, luminous petals and subtle citrus-like top notes. What emerges is a fragrance that honors the flower's quiet beauty rather than amplifying it beyond recognition.
The note structure follows a classic white floral pyramid: crisp top notes of white rose and geranium give way to a heart of jasmine sambac absolute and champaca, grounded by musk and amber. What makes this composition interesting is the restraint. Jasmine sambac brings creamy, indolic sweetness, while champaca threads through the jasmine, adding exotic warmth that deepens the overall character. The musk-amber base keeps everything close to the skin rather than throwing it outward. It's not trying to fill a room. It's trying to be remembered instead of noticed.
The evolution
The opening arrives clean and crisp, white rose and geranium in near-perfect balance, the geranium adding a green, slightly medicinal edge that keeps the rose from getting precious. As the fragrance develops, the jasmine sambac begins to surface, bringing warmth and a soft creamy sweetness that pushes the composition from fresh to floral. The champaca follows, its exotic character threading through the jasmine like a second voice harmonizing. The musk and amber take over, wrapping everything in something skin-close and intimate. The drydown reads like soap left drying on warm skin, clean, powdery, personal. Moderate sillage throughout.
Cultural impact
Magnolia (2023) presents itself with quiet confidence, present without projecting, refined without announcing. The powdery, slightly soapy character draws comparisons to vintage milled soaps, a quality some find charming and others find nostalgic. It's the kind of fragrance that invites closeness rather than demanding attention, suited to someone who values composition over spectacle.
