The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Parfum de la Nuit translates directly: perfume of the night. The name is the concept. The official description says it plainly: a perfume with the power to release the uninhabited self. That word, uninhabited, is the key. The fragrance opens with a burst of citrus brightness and herbal notes that feel crisp and immediate, drawing you in before the composition deepens into something richer and more complex. As the top notes fade, warmer elements emerge, building layer upon layer of depth that unfolds over hours of wear. The scent evolves on the skin, revealing new facets gradually, like something long held back finally given room to breathe.
The heart of this fragrance, rose de mai and labdanum, is where the tension lives. Rose de mai brings a honeyed, slightly waxy richness to the composition. Labdanum adds a resinous, grounding quality that provides contrast. Together they create a heart that feels simultaneously lush and anchored. But it's the base that makes this composition unusual. Cumin appears here, a note that brings warmth, depth, a human quality. In a fragrance this opulent, it becomes a deliberate counterpoint. And that is exactly the point.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly, bergamot's citrus brightness followed by artemisia's herbal, slightly bitter cut. It reads clean, almost brisk. Then something shifts. Rose de mai arrives quietly, honeyed and rich, while labdanum's warmth starts to build underneath. By the late heart phase, leather and frankincense have fully arrived. They don't announce themselves, they assert. The drydown brings warm spice from saffron and cardamom, while cumin and ambergris add an animalic undertone that feels almost skin-close. Multiple wood oils, cedarwood, sandalwood, guaiac, layer into something dense and complex. The drydown holds for a considerable time on skin, and on fabric it softens but doesn't disappear.
Cultural impact
Parfum de la Nuit was launched into the Prestige Collection, ROJA London's collection. Positioned for evening wear and special occasions, the composition features a cumin-animalic warmth in the base that creates deliberate tension within the overall structure. At its price point, it is not designed to please everyone, and that is entirely the point.
