The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ahlam takes its name from Ahlam Alshamsi, the celebrated Arabian singer. When she turned to Roja Dove for a signature scent, the brief was simple: a queen deserves nothing less than extraordinary. Dove crafted a composition befitting a world-renowned star, a fragrance that embodies the spirit and character of the woman it was made for. The result is a scent as distinctive and commanding as its namesake, blending richness with elegance in every spray.
The pyramid here is unusually generous for a soliflore-adjacent concept. Eleven base materials, oud, sandalwood, orris, vanilla, musk, patchouli, ambergris, almond, saffron, rhubarb, powder, suggest Dove wanted layers that reveal themselves over time rather than a linear arc. The rhubarb note is particularly unexpected in this register: its tartness typically appears in lighter, greener compositions, not in an oud-dominant oriental. Its presence here creates a subtle tartness that cuts through the richness, preventing the base from becoming cloying.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and brief, lemon's acidity lasts only minutes before the florals take over. That transition is swift, almost startling in its clarity. The heart is where Ahlam earns its reputation: rose de Mai and Grasse jasmine form a sweet, almost juicy bouquet, with geranium and ylang-ylang adding a green-herbal counterpoint that keeps everything grounded. Violet adds a powdery softness from the start, anticipating the drydown before it arrives. The base is where patience pays off. Oud doesn't arrive immediately, it emerges gradually, deepening the composition as the florals recede. Powdery notes, vanilla, and ambergris wrap close to the skin for hours, creating a warm and lingering trail that invites closeness.
Cultural impact
Ahlam presents an oriental character with powdery qualities rather than darkness, offering glamour and visual appeal. The saffron-rhubarb tartness adds a distinctive edge, creating a tartness that keeps the sweetness honest and grounded. For collectors, it represents a perfume that tells a story beyond its notes, a composition that speaks to both artistry and the indulgent nature of fine perfumery. The blend of spice and florals creates something memorable, a scent that holds its own in any collection.
