The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ralph Lauren's Romance arrived in 1998 with a simple proposition: timeless love, bottled. It became one of the house's most worn fragrances, the scent women reach for when elegance isn't negotiable. Romance EDP Intense, launching in 2023, takes that same emotional territory and turns up the temperature. Gabriela Chelariu approached the brief by honoring what worked, the rose at the center, the romantic promise, while building a richer, warmer architecture around it. Cedar and sandalwood form a base that's unapologetically woody. Vanilla softens the landing. The result is a Romance for someone who already knows what she wants and isn't waiting for permission.
What makes this composition interesting is how the green notes function as a bridge rather than an opening act. Lily of the Valley absolute and violet leaf absolute don't announce themselves in a single burst, they layer in slowly between the bright citrus and the warm heart, keeping the transition from feeling abrupt. Meanwhile, calendula adds a subtle herbal warmth that most rose compositions skip entirely. The result is a fragrance that doesn't feel assembled from a template. Each phase has somewhere to go.
The evolution
The opening hits clean. Bergamot and blackcurrant arrive together, tart, bright, immediately present. Green mandarin adds a zest that keeps the top from feeling like just another fruity-floral. Within twenty minutes, the green mandarin begins to recede, and something warmer takes its place. The heart builds gradually. Rose doesn't burst in, it arrives. Ylang-ylang follows, pushing the florals toward cream rather than sweetness. The base takes longer than expected. Cedarwood and sandalwood don't assert themselves immediately; they wait until the florals have had their moment, then slowly anchor everything down. Vanilla follows, wrapping the woods in warmth. Patchouli is the quietest element, barely there, just enough to keep the drydown from feeling light. The final hours are intimate. Close to the skin, warm, lasting without announcing itself.
Cultural impact
The 2023 release of Romance EDP Intense arrived in a fragrance landscape that had spent years chasing either extreme intensity or minimalist transparency. Chelariu's approach, woody-floral warmth that reads as both confident and romantic, positioned the fragrance for women who want Ralph Lauren's timeless elegance without feeling nostalgic.
