The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Black XS arrived in 2018 as a repackaging of the 2005 original, but the fragrance itself remained unchanged. Olivier Cresp and Rosendo Mateu designed the composition to reflect Rabanne's embrace of provocative materials and bold aesthetics. The scent was built to be unapologetically present, using contrasts between sharp citrus and warm oriental sweetness to create something that felt intentionally confrontational. The 2018 release simply gave that same formula a new bottle, preserving the original vision without dilution.
The note structure in Black XS (2018) reflects a philosophy of deliberate contrast. The bright citrus and herbal opening is not random; it exists to create tension against the warm, sweet oriental heart. Praline and spice work together because the sweetness of praline could easily become one-dimensional without the grounding heat of cinnamon and black cardamom. Similarly, the patchouli and black amber drydown serves a purpose: it absorbs the sweetness from the heart and redirects it into something more complex and lasting.
The evolution
The opening of Black XS (2018) leads with lemon and sage, a pairing that delivers immediate aromatic energy before settling into something softer. Marigold holds the transition, adding a subtle golden floral warmth that previews the heart to come. The heart introduces praline as the dominant note, bringing a rich nutty sweetness that feels indulgent and warm. Cinnamon and black cardamom layer into the heart, creating a spiced warmth that adds depth without tipping into heaviness. Tolu balsam smooths the heart's edges, providing a resinous softness that makes the warmth feel approachable. The drydown then takes over with patchouli leading the way, delivering earthy depth that balances the earlier sweetness. Black amber adds a warm, almost smoky richness, while ebony tree and rosewood complete the base, leaving a lasting impression of dark, polished wood.
Cultural impact
Black XS occupies a space in masculine perfumery where sweet oriental notes take center stage. Citrus keeps it accessible while praline and patchouli deliver substance. This gives the fragrance a particular quality: richness without sacrificing wearability. For those exploring fragrance beyond basic fresh colognes, Black XS offers an accessible entry point into sweeter, more indulgent territory. The scent opens with lemon and sage, creating immediate brightness. Praline and spice form the heart, bringing warmth and confectionery depth that lingers on the skin.
