The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Empire Gold arrived in 2019 from Hinode, the Brazilian house that released it as part of a growing portfolio of men's fragrances aimed at confident, everyday wear. The brand named it for a specific feeling, something like the olfactory version of arriving somewhere you've earned the right to be. Jérôme Epinette composed the scent, working in the woody-aromatic register. He built a frame around grapefruit and bergamot, then threaded green apple, sea air, sage, and mint through the middle before landing on woody notes, papyrus, and leather in the base. The composition reads like a study in contrast. The citrus top is brisk and immediate, almost percussive, while the heart softens into cooler greens and a wash of something briny and open.
What makes the composition interesting is the pairing of marine notes with papyrus and leather. Here the marine sits between sage and mint, so it reads as breeze through an open window rather than ocean splash. Papyrus brings a dry, papery warmth that grounds the leather instead of letting it dominate. The green apple does something unexpected in the heart too. It adds a crispness that pulls the mint and sage toward something greener and more layered, sharpening the overall effect without tipping into anything too sharp.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to grapefruit. It hits bright, almost tart, with bergamot softening the edges. There's a clean, soapy quality that reads as fresh laundry meets expensive cologne. Then the green apple arrives and changes the temperature. It adds a crisp, fruit-forward sweetness that sits underneath the citrus rather than competing with it. Sage arrives next, herbal and slightly medicinal, and the mint shows up cool, not sharp, more like crushed leaves than toothpaste. As the composition moves past the opening, the sea notes have settled into something atmospheric. You stop smelling the ocean and start smelling humid air, the kind that sits on skin after a long meeting in a crowded room. The woody base doesn't rush. Papyrus arrives first, dry and papery, like the inside cover of a hardback book. Then leather. Not suede, not patent.
Cultural impact
Empire Gold earned recognition as a finalist in the 'O Perfumista' category at the 2019 Prêmio ABIHPEC, Beleza Brasil. It wears as a daytime power scent, the kind of fragrance that performs in warm weather and indoor settings without overwhelming. The woody-aromatic structure, built around grapefruit and bergamot up top, sage and mint through the heart, and papyrus and leather in the base, gives it enough depth to feel substantial without becoming heavy or aggressive in close quarters. The papyrus brings a dry, papery texture, and the leather adds warmth without tipping into anything overtly smoky or animalic.
