The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Drama Nuui 23 arrived in 2008, a release from Pierre Guillaume Paris that announced its intentions through composition rather than ceremony. The fragrance sits within the catalog of a house whose work tends toward the personal and the considered, the sort of perfume that rewards attention over acquaintance. The name carries a theatrical edge, though the juice itself is anything but stagey. Pierre Guillaume built it around absinthe and tea at the top, jasmine at the heart, guaiac wood and musk underneath. Aromatic and green with a white floral pulse, the structure unfolds like a quiet evening rather than a crowded room. There's a deliberate patience in the way the notes are stacked, each one waiting its turn rather than competing for the foreground.
The interesting tension here sits between absinthe and jasmine, two materials that rarely share space. Absinthe brings the green, herbal bitterness of wormwood, vegetal and almost mentholated in the right hands. Tea grounds it with tannin and a dry warmth. Then jasmine arrives, indolic and unmistakably floral, and the question becomes whether the cool aromatic top surrenders to the white floral heart or resists it. The answer is neither. They hold each other at arm's length. Guaiac wood underneath adds the faint smoke of something just extinguished, while musk keeps the whole thing skin-close rather than room-filling. Most green-floral compositions lean either powdery or aquatic.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are where absinthe earns its keep. Bitter, cool, slightly medicinal, with the tannic pull of black tea cutting through. It's a bracing opening, the kind that reads as cold even on warm skin. By the thirty-minute mark the jasmine begins to surface, not as a lush tropical flower but as a thinner, more indolic version of itself, the nighttime jasmine, the one that smells slightly of overripe fruit and warm stone. Through the two-hour middle phase, the jasmine settles into a persistent thread while guaiac wood starts to smoke underneath. There is no sweetness to lean on, no amber to rescue the composition. The drydown, somewhere around the four-hour mark, is where the musk takes over. It doesn't roar. It barely speaks. But it's there on skin the next morning, faint and warm, closer to clean laundry than to anything animalic.
Cultural impact
Drama Nuui 23 is a green-floral composition that earns its specificity through unusual pairings. The absinthe and jasmine combination gives the fragrance a character that resists easy categorization, sitting between aromatic herbal and indolic white floral without fully committing to either. The tea note reinforces the green, tannic dimension while adding a certain dryness that keeps the whole composition from tipping into sweetness. It's a fragrance that rewards the wearer who appreciates its particular register, someone drawn to bitter florals and herbal whites over the more conventional offerings of mainstream perfumery.
