The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pastor Privé, founded in 1999, built its reputation reviving historic French perfume heritage through archival re-issues and faithful reconstructions. Liberté Totale, launched in 2021, marked a deliberate departure from that reverence. Perfumers Edgar Pastor and Nina Lamaison chose instead to create something entirely new, leveraging the brand's expertise but building from fresh ground. The name itself, Liberté Totale, signals the intent: a fragrance unbound by tradition, embracing modernity without sacrificing depth.
The note selection reflects a deliberate architecture: bright, effusive top notes that attract attention, warm spices that hold interest through the heart, and deep woods and resins that reward patience in the drydown. Cranberry and lime provide accessibility and immediate appeal, while frankincense and oud signal intention and expertise. The combination of sage with saffron creates an unexpected warmth, and the leather-guaiac wood pairing in the base provides staying power that invites re-application throughout the evening.
The evolution
The opening immediately establishes energy, with cranberry and lime creating a tart, vivid first impression. Pink pepper adds dimension, preventing the initial burst from feeling one-dimensional. As the fragrance develops, the heart reveals its complexity: cardamom and nutmeg bring warmth, sage adds an herbal counterpoint, and frankincense with saffron introduces depth and resinous character. The drydown completes the journey, with guaiac wood, leather, and oud creating a smoky, sensuous foundation that lingers while oakmoss, patchouli, and musk ground the entire composition in earthiness.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, Liberté Totale has been noted for its bold spice‑citrus‑oud blend, often mentioned alongside Pastor Privé’s Spritz and Oh My Oudness as a modern take on classic French masculinity. Wearers describe it as the scent of a confident wanderer who enjoys city evenings, making it a frequent pick for nightlife and creative gatherings.
