The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Edgar Pastor composed Oh My Oudness in 2024, a year marked by steady output from the perfumer. The brief, by all evidence, was indulgence without apology. Assam oud anchors the formula, the deep resinous variety that gives the composition its gravitational pull. Around it, Edgar Pastor builds a structure that treats oud not as a flex but as a vehicle: a way to carry something sweeter, something spicier, something almost edible through an entire afternoon on skin. The opening hits with that raw, almost barnyard character that unrefined Indian agarwood carries, a slightly animalic edge that quickly mellows as the supporting cast steps forward. There's a warmth underneath from the first spray, a suggestion of the gourmand territory the fragrance is about to explore.
What separates this oud composition from the crowded shelf is the heart, specifically the decision to drop roasted cacao and nutmeg right into the middle of the pyramid. Cacao is an unexpected player in an oud context. It deepens the sweetness that whipped cream later delivers, but it also darkens, pulling the composition toward something closer to bitter chocolate than milk. The roasted quality gives the oud a powdery edge, almost like cocoa-dusted leather. Nutmeg pushes warmth without burning, offering a soft spiced breeze that lifts the heavier notes rather than smothering them.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes smell almost like a cold dessert: red mandarin, that bright sharp sweetness, then quickly a creamy warmth rolling in underneath. By the one-hour mark, the cacao has fully woken up. It reads dark, slightly bitter, dusted with nutmeg heat. The fruity brightness has folded into the background, leaving something richer, almost edible, like the air after a candle goes out in a kitchen where someone was tempering chocolate. Somewhere around hour three or four, the Assam oud surfaces properly. Not aggressive, not barnyard, just deep, resinous, warm wood with a faint medicinal undertone. Leather grounds the whole thing, and the whipped cream accord has long since blurred any sharp edges between the heart and base. By the 4-6 hour mark, what lingers on skin is a soft oud-musk, warm, faintly sweet, the kind of drydown that still registers on a sweater the next morning. It does not fade so much as slowly turn down its own volume.
Cultural impact
Oh My Oudness sits comfortably within Pastor Privé's 2024 wave of original compositions, a batch that ranged from bright citrus spritzes to the gourmand-spiced Magic Pie and the coffee-leaning Gaelach Coffee. The fragrance reads as a confident entry into textured oud territory, offering genuine Assam-style oud presence alongside an unusual cocoa bridge that makes the format feel fresh. The whipped cream and roasted cacao combination gives the composition a dessert-adjacent sweetness without tipping into outright sugar, while the nutmeg and cedar keep it anchored in something woody and grown-up.
