Why it exists.
The beginning
New Ambre Gris 2020 arrived from Pastor Fragrances in 2021, composed by perfumer Edgar Pastor. The name points straight at ambergris, one of perfumery's most storied materials, and the composition circles that gravitational center with citrus brightness above and mossy depth below. Citrus-aromatic by category, but built around the tension between sparkling fruit and a resinous, leathery base. The opening lifts with a sharp, almost effervescent fruit accord that catches light from multiple angles, then steadily settles as warmer, earthier notes begin to take hold. There's a sense of architecture to the wear, a deliberate stacking of fresh and grounded elements that gradually shift the mood from bright daytime energy to something more shadowed and reflective.
What's interesting here is the ingredient geography working in concert. Sicilian bergamot and key lime stack two citrus registers, while pineapple and blackcurrant push toward a tropical-cassis sweetness. Indonesian nutmeg and Madagascan geranium introduce warm spiciness and a green floral lift. Then the base commits: ambergris and ambroxan deliver that mineral, slightly salty skin warmth, while Singapore patchouli and oakmoss ground the whole thing in damp earth and old libraries.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are almost aggressive in their brightness, pineapple and bergamot competing for attention while pink pepper adds a dry, buzzing heat. The fruit doesn't fade so much as get pushed aside by the heart, where jasmine and geranium arrive with a slightly soapy, herbal greenness, and nutmeg wraps everything in a warm, dusty haze. The leather shows up earlier than expected, around the thirty-minute mark, bringing a soft suede quality before the oakmoss and patchouli take over for the long haul. The drydown is where this earns its name. Ambergris and ambroxan settle into a skin-like, mineral warmth that lasts the better part of a workday, and the cedar keeps it from going sweet or heavy. On fabric the next morning, the oakmoss and ambergris are still there, quieter, saltier, closer to skin.
