The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Autour de… series is Orlane's floral essay, a collection that takes a single bloom and builds a world around it. For Autour du Coquelicot, Shyamala Maisondieu composed the scent, working with the red poppy, a flower that rarely anchors a fragrance. She treated it less as a note and more as a mood. The idea was to capture the flower in its full arc, from the bright, almost brittle freshness of a field at midday to the warmer, slightly honeyed quiet that settles in once the sun drops. Maisondieu has described the flower itself as carrying its own quiet mystery, a quality she wanted to preserve rather than overwhelm.
What makes this composition interesting is the structural tension. The top is all snap and lift. Cardamom, blackcurrant, tangerine, a burst of citruses that reads almost edible. Then the heart pivots hard. Coriander brings a green, slightly soapy edge that bridges into osmanthus, rose, and tuberose, flowers chosen for their texture as much as their scent. Red poppy sits among them, but it doesn't announce itself as a single note. Instead, it weaves through the floral accord with a dry, almost brittle quality, a papery impression that lends the bouquet a certain restraint.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes belong to the fruits. Blackcurrant leads, tart and almost jammy, with tangerine brightening the edges and cardamom adding a green, almost peppery lift. It's fresh, but there's a warmth underneath that hints at where this is going. By the 30-minute mark, the fruits recede and the florals take over, but not in the way you might expect. This isn't a white floral explosion. It's a textured, almost hazy bouquet. Rose and tuberose provide body, osmanthus adds a soft, fruity warmth that leans toward apricot and dried fruit, and the poppy weaves through everything with that dry, papery impression, keeping the composition from going too sweet. The coriander shows up here too, lending a green, slightly herbal edge that keeps the heart interesting. The base settles in around the 2-hour mark. Benzoin and tonka create a warm, resinous cradle.
Cultural impact
Autour du Coquelicot has earned a devoted following since its release, with wearers often returning to it as a reference point for poppy-themed compositions. Part of its appeal lies in how it handles the coquelicot itself, treating the wild red poppy not as a decorative note but as the central character around which everything else is arranged. The fragrance captures a certain pastoral sensibility, the feeling of sun-warmed fields and the quiet transition from afternoon into evening, without ever slipping into nostalgia or sentimentality.
