The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
004 Amour launched in 2021 from One Day, with Michael Wong credited as the nose behind the composition. The name says it plainly, and the composition follows suit. Sambac jasmine and bitter orange open with brightness and weight at the same time, the kind of contrast that feels like the moment right before someone turns around in a crowded room. There's a tension in that opening, a pull between something sharp and something almost creamy, and the fragrance lets both voices speak without favoring either one. Magnolia and rose carry the middle, both flowers chosen for their soft, rounded quality, neither sharp nor powdery but generous in a way that feels tactile, like petals held between the fingers.
What makes 004 Amour stand out is the restraint. The jasmine sambac carries a fullness that could easily overwhelm, but here it stays measured, never tipping into the dense, almost narcotic territory that strong jasmine can reach. It sits beside bitter orange, whose sharp citrus zest keeps things lifted, bright and clean, like the first peel of a ripe fruit pulled away from the skin. Magnolia adds a lemony, almost banana-skin facet that bridges citrus and floral without any heavy-handed sweetness, a quiet tropical whisper rather than a shout.
The evolution
The opening belongs to bitter orange, bright and almost bitter, the kind of zest that pricks the inside of your nose. Jasmine sambac arrives alongside it, not behind the citrus but right next to it, and the two materials trade the lead for a while. The orange's sharpness softens while the jasmine deepens from airy to creamy, almost dewy, settling into itself the way a flower opens in real time. Magnolia rises next, adding a soft, lemony fullness that pushes the composition into its warmest, most present phase. There's a glow to this stage, a kind of lit-from-within quality that makes the florals feel less like a bouquet and more like a single stem held close. The white musk underneath never disappears, but it stays patient, a low hum that keeps the heart from floating away.
Cultural impact
004 Amour sits comfortably in the contemporary floral category, offering a romantic and present character without the weight that many florals carry. It appeals to wearers who want something soft and luminous, a fragrance that announces itself gently and stays close rather than filling a room. The restraint is the point: warmth built through clean woods and white musk, through flowers that feel generous without becoming syrupy, through a composition that trusts its lighter materials to do the heavy lifting. It's a fragrance designed for closeness rather than projection, for the wearer who wants something felt rather than noticed.
