The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Berlin arrived in 2021 as the most confrontational entry in the collection. Where other city-fragrances reach for skylines and sunshine, Berlin reaches for something harder to photograph. The opening arrives green and mineral, vetiver and cedar establishing a cool, almost architectural foundation before birch tar asserts itself through the composition. The tar doesn't arrive gently, it comes with a sharp, medicinal quality that sits somewhere between antiseptic and smoky, creosote-like in its intensity. Rose de Mai appears as the smoke settles, not delicate but present, waxy and sweet against the tar's dryness. These materials negotiate with each other throughout the wear, neither one dominating entirely.
Birch tar is not a common heart note. Most perfumers use it as an accent, a smoky whisper in the base. Berlin puts it front and center, where it does something unusual: it smells medicinal before it smells smoky. The creosote note arrives with an almost antiseptic sharpness, then softens into something warmer as the rose and musk develop. This inversion shapes the fragrance's character. Birch tar functions as a primary material rather than a supporting element, shifting from its antiseptic edge toward something more complex as the composition opens.
The evolution
Vetiver and Atlas Cedar hit first, that clean, green mineral wave that smells like the moment before a city fully wakes. It's cool, slightly rooty, and carries an almost camphoraceous edge. This opening lasts maybe twenty minutes before the birch tar begins to assert itself, smoke rising through the green like something catching light. The rose de Mai doesn't bloom so much as arrive, it emerges from the smoke rather than preceding it, sweet and waxy against the tar's dryness. Together they form a strange negotiation: floral grace in a smoky room. The leather accord surfaces in the base, dry and slightly animalic, while guaiac wood adds warm, slightly balsamic depth. Musk keeps everything close to the skin. The sillage remains intimate, the fragrance persisting quietly as it ages, the smoke fading into something subtle and warm.
Cultural impact
Berlin occupies a particular space in contemporary perfumery where smoky, tarry materials meet rose in a distinctive way. The Ethos of Cities collection from One Day explores how cities can be translated into scent, and Berlin stands as a strong expression of that approach. Birch tar as a primary heart note is uncommon in modern fragrance, where trend-driven compositions typically favor more accessible materials. The 2021 release arrived during a period when fragrance enthusiasts showed growing interest in compositions that challenge expectations and present their materials with conviction.
