The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Savannah's Heart takes its cue from the golden light of "Out of Africa", that cinematic moment where the African landscape stretches vast and unhurried under a setting sun. Luca Maffei designed this fragrance as an olfactory translation of that specific quality of light: warm, golden, enveloping. The name itself carries the weight of what it references, not just a place, but an emotional landscape. The African savannah isn't merely scenery in the film; it's a character that shapes everyone who encounters it. Maffei translated that character into resin and wood, coffee and vanilla, building a composition that breathes wide and slow, like an horizon that never quite ends.
What makes this structure interesting is how the coffee functions as a bridge rather than a destination. In most fragrances, coffee plays the starring role, here it's the middle passage between the bright tartness of rhubarb and labdanum and the soft, powdery warmth of the drydown. Karmawood, a proprietary accord, adds a smoky, woody dimension that lifts the coffee without competing with it. The result is a fragrance that moves through three distinct acts without jarring transitions, each phase hands off to the next like a conversation that flows naturally from hello to goodnight.
The evolution
Labdanum arrives first, sticky, resinous, immediately warm. Bergamot adds a brief citrus flicker before rhubarb takes over with its green-tart bite, like biting into a stalk of rhubarb on a hot afternoon. The opening is vibrant and insistent, the tartness commanding attention with a satisfying sharpness that lingers pleasantly. As the scent begins to breathe, the coffee and Karmawood step forward. The transition isn't dramatic; the tartness simply fades, replaced by something darker and richer. The coffee here isn't the sharp espresso of morning, it's the warm, creamy weight of arabica slowly brewed in the afternoon sun. Karmawood adds a smoky undertone that keeps the heart from becoming too soft. The fragrance continues its journey, sandalwood and cashmere wood rising to prominence, wrapping the composition in creamy, velvety woodiness.
Cultural impact
As an extrait de parfum, Savannah's Heart occupies a more concentrated space than typical Eau de Parfum releases, offering a richer, more intensely layered experience. The coffee-heavy heart brings unexpected depth and complexity, creating a warm, enveloping character that reads especially well in cooler months. Its bold profile draws comparisons to more intricate niche releases, positioning it as a distinctive choice for those seeking something beyond conventional fragrance conventions.
