The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Hypnotic Leather arrived in 2020, previously carrying the name Strange Black Oud. The fragrance marked a notable shift in approach for the house, moving away from the sweeter territories the brand had explored toward something darker and more complex. Jousset's signature warmth still threads through the composition, but here it wears a different face, softened by smoke and the dry, textured quality of leather. The blend feels intentional, with oud lending its characteristic depth and resinous richness to the overall structure. The result is a scent that carries the house's identity in its DNA while stepping into entirely different territory, one that speaks in lower tones and darker hues.
What makes Hypnotic Leather structurally interesting is the way the leather functions as a heart rather than a base. Most leather fragrances build downward from an aromatic opening into a hide-like drydown. Here, the leather arrives mid-performance, taking over from the bergamot-resin opening and dominating for hours before the vanilla finally softens the edges. The iris adds a powdery dimension that keeps the leather from reading as purely aggressive, it's the powder on a leather jacket, the softness underneath the tough exterior. The oud doesn't hit immediately either. It accumulates slowly, adding smoky depth to the base that makes the final drydown feel like warm skin rather than just fragrance.
The evolution
The opening is sharp and resinous, bergamot cutting through with a bright, almost medicinal quality that fades fast. Within minutes, leather takes command. Not the clean leather of a new jacket but something older, smokier, carrying weight and history. There is an animalic undertone present, grounded and present without ever tipping into harshness. Iris powder provides a soft, slightly floral counterpoint that tempers the darker elements without overpowering them. The vanilla arrives eventually, later in the development rather than early, and when it does, it doesn't sweeten so much as soften the edges. The drydown is intimate. Close. The kind of scent you catch on your wrist when you move and think, oh right. That's still there. On skin, the fragrance evolves over many hours, with the leather quality persisting long after the initial brightness fades.
Cultural impact
Hypnotic Leather sits at an interesting intersection for Jousset, a house known for sweetness releasing something leather-forward and smoky. The composition attracts attention precisely because it diverges from expectations. Smoke threads through the leather here, adding another layer of darkness without becoming acrid. It has presence, a quality that gives the fragrance weight and makes itself known without needing to shout. The fragrance speaks rather than announces. Rather than a statement about dessert or confection, it makes a statement about the wearer, something more personal and less expected.
