The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in Chinese history, inspired Empress in Bloom, a fragrance that translates that remarkable life into scent. Conceived as an olfactory portrait of her strength, resilience, and refinement, the composition imagines what it smells like when a garden blooms not as decoration but as declaration. Perfumer Anunsith Wongkornvanich composed this 2024 release for Odyssey, building a floral-fruity structure around themes of power held gracefully. Honeysuckle, sweet orange, and peach open with luminous confidence, the fruit trio reading bright and generous, almost effervescent on first contact.
Osmanthus is the unusual move here. Wongkornvanich chose osmanthus instead of the more conventional jasmine or rose, a quieter, apricot-skinned flower with leathery depth, lending the composition a fruit-without-fruitiness quality that reads more sophisticated than sweet. There's something about osmanthus that doesn't behave like other florals; it carries a tannic edge, a subtle cured quality that feels closer to tea or dried fruit than to fresh petals on skin.
The evolution
The opening belongs to sweet orange and honeysuckle, bright, almost exuberant, with peach sitting underneath like a softer undertone. It reads as a straightforward floral-fruity introduction, generous and easy, the kind of scent that announces itself in a room without raising its voice. The orange carries a clean, citric snap that cuts through the honeysuckle's nectarous warmth, and the peach lends a soft, almost creamy roundness that keeps the opening from feeling sharp or thin. Then the transition happens. Orange blossom and peony arrive, and the fragrance starts to deepen, the fruit receding as the florals take on weight. The shift feels natural rather than abrupt, like watching a garden move from morning brightness into fuller midday light.
Cultural impact
Empress in Bloom draws on the legacy of Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in Chinese history, translating that historical figure into a floral-fruity composition for 2024. The concept gives this release a distinctive anchor: a woman who held the throne rendered in petals and fruit rather than in more aggressive leather or smoke territory. The mate in the base distinguishes it from the typical white-floral crowd, adding a dry, contemplative finish that lingers longer on skin than the bright opening would suggest.
