The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mindscape launched in 2024, composed by Anunsith Wongkornvanich for Odyssey, a contemporary house. This particular composition charts an inner landscape, drawing its compass from the life and work of artist Yayoi Kusama, whose endless dots emerged from decades of struggle and turned private hardship into universal pattern. The fragrance translates that transformation into scent: the smoke and resin of endurance giving way to something warmer, more inhabited. It is a composition about the distance between breaking open and blooming, the territory Kusama spent a lifetime mapping in paint and installation, now rendered in birch tar, Thai oud, and bourbon vanilla. The reference is structural rather than literal.
What makes Mindscape structurally interesting is its sequencing. The opening leans medicinal and austere, birch tar and cardamom pulling toward campfire char and incense, before cistus adds a leathery, ambered warmth. The heart is where the composition commits: Thai oud from Prachinburi stacked against myrrh and guaiac wood for a resinous gravity. The base then refuses the usual drydown into pure sweetness. Bourbon vanilla absolute, Peru balsam, and frankincense hold the smoke in place, so the vanilla reads as a coat over embers rather than a dessert course.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes are confrontational. Birch tar and cardamom dominate, giving the opening a tarry, ashen quality that reads more like a smoldering fire pit than a perfume. This is the phase that polarizes. Cistus surfaces underneath, adding a leathery, slightly animalic warmth, but the smoke holds the lead. Around the forty-minute mark, the heart takes over. Thai oud arrives with weight, resinous and dense, and myrrh smooths the edges into something incense-like and contemplative. Guaiac wood adds a creamy, smoky depth that grounds the oud. By the two-hour mark, the composition has shifted from confrontational to meditative. The base settles in: bourbon vanilla absolute softens the remaining smoke, Peru balsam adds a balsamic sweetness, and frankincense keeps everything elevated. The drydown lingers for hours, a warm, resinous vanilla with persistent smolder. On fabric the next morning, a faint trace of incense and vanilla remains.
Cultural impact
Mindscape has drawn attention as an oud composition with a clear narrative spine, rooted in the visual and biographical work of Yayoi Kusama. The Kusama reference gives the release a recognizable framework for readers already familiar with her dotted installations and mirrored rooms, situating the fragrance within a longer conversation about repetition, obsession, and the conversion of private struggle into shared pattern.
