The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Under the Sun emerged from a collaboration between Odyssey and the emotional landscape of the Taiwanese film A Sun, where sunlight serves as a metaphor for relentless expectation. Perfumer Anunsith Wongkornvanich approached this brief by translating the concept of pressure and illumination into olfactory form, beginning with bright citrus and fruity notes that suggest the first intensity of sunlight before the weight settles in.
The note pairing rationale reflects a tension between radiance and groundedness. Mandarin and peach provide accessible brightness, but cinnamon signals that this is not a simple celebration of sunlight. The black pepper and vetiver in the heart and base anchor the composition, ensuring that warmth does not become overwhelming. Orris root bridges the transition, its powdery elegance suggesting that even under the most demanding light, refinement remains possible.
The evolution
The fragrance evolves as a map of the day unfolding. Mandarin and peach create the initial burst of morning warmth, touched by cinnamon's spicy anticipation. As the scent develops, magnolia and solar notes capture midday intensity, while black pepper introduces the tension that comes with sustained brightness. The drydown of orris root, vetiver, and amber represents the cooling of late afternoon, where shadows lengthen and the earlier pressure finally releases into something calmer and more contemplative.
Cultural impact
Under the Sun by Odyssey captures a moment of Mediterranean warmth that resonates with travelers and homebodies alike. Its blend of cinnamon, mandarin orange, and peach evokes memories of bustling market stalls and lazy seaside afternoons. This fragrance has become a subtle cultural marker, often referenced in social gatherings as a reminder of sunny getaways and shared meals. By marrying spice with fruit, it bridges traditional spice routes with modern leisure, sparking conversations about heritage, seasonal cooking, and the simple pleasure of sunlight on skin. Its popularity in diverse circles highlights how scent can unite people across ages, prompting nostalgic storytelling and a collective appreciation for bright, uplifting aromas.
