The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Aftertears joined Odyssey's catalogue in 2024, composed by perfumer Anunsith Wongkornvanich. The name itself does a lot of work, suggesting not grief exactly, but the strange clarity that follows a release. That post-emotion lightness, when the air feels washed and the body feels softer, that's the territory this composition maps. Odyssey frames its fragrances as waypoints, each one a snapshot of a moment or mood rather than a destination. Aftertears fits that philosophy: less a place you visit and more a state you recognize. The brief, by all evidence, was to bottle something gentle. Not fragile, not precious, just quiet in a way that feels earned.
The interesting choice here is restraint. Aldehydes can be sharp, even aggressive in the wrong hands, but paired with pink pepper and saffron, they read as clean linen rather than cleaning product. Solar notes do the heavy lifting in the heart, that increasingly common accord that mimics warm skin in afternoon light, supported by freesia and peach for a soft, almost translucent sweetness. The base builds a fuzzy, intimate warmth through cashmere musk and ambrette, two materials that don't project so much as radiate close to the skin.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the aldehydes. They arrive fizzy and bright, almost carbonated, with the pink pepper adding a dry snap and the saffron threading through underneath like a warm spice you'd find in a kitchen, not a perfume. It evokes fresh laundry on a warm day, crisp and inviting rather than synthetic. From there, the aldehydes recede and the heart takes over gradually. The solar notes do something clever: they don't smell like sunshine, they smell like the feeling of sunshine on closed eyelids. Peach adds a fuzzy fruit sweetness, freesia keeps things from going too gourmand, and white musk starts laying the groundwork for the drydown. This is the phase most people will recognize as the fragrance's true identity, the soft, radiant core that lingers in memory long after the sparkle has faded. As the hours pass, the base settles in.
Cultural impact
Aftertears arrived as a distinctive release from Odyssey, a house whose catalogue reads as a series of carefully considered compositions rather than mass-market blockbusters. The fragrance itself draws on aldehydic sparkle, solar accords, and skin-close musks, materials that have long been part of perfumery's vocabulary but get treated here with a particular sensitivity to texture and wear. The aldehydes offer brightness without aggression, the solar notes create warmth without weight, and the base of cashmere musk and ambrette settles into that intimate, close-to-skin territory that rewards attention over projection.
