The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The original Rain arrived in 2006 as part of Marc Jacobs' Splash Collection, a set of uncomplicated aquatic fragrances built around simple pleasures. By 2016, the brand brought four favorites back, including Rain, reimagined as Rain Splash. This 2016 edition revisited the original's clean aquatic character, maintaining the collection's philosophy of straightforward, pleasant scents. The reformulation preserved the mineral freshness and green undertones that defined the 2006 version, while subtly refining certain elements to suit contemporary preferences. Fans of the original found familiar ground here, though the updated version carried its own quiet distinctions within the Splash line's enduring legacy.
The rain accord forms the heart of this fragrance, providing its essential character. It captures mineral coolness and a clean green wash that settles over everything, creating an atmospheric quality. White orchid contributes a dewy floral quality, while passion fruit adds tropical brightness to the heart, keeping the composition light without drifting into flat territory. The grass and cypress in the opening lend botanical authenticity to the scent. Teakwood and tree moss anchor the base with earthy depth, grounding the composition and providing lasting presence.
The evolution
The opening arrives crisp and green, featuring cypress and wet grass with a flash of clementine that brightens the initial impression. Within minutes, the rain accord emerges, bringing cool mineral tones and an atmospheric quality that defines the fragrance's character. White orchid and passion fruit provide softness and dewy floral notes, preventing the composition from becoming flat or overly austere. As the top notes fade, the base gradually asserts itself with musk, teak, and tree moss creating a clean, intimate drydown that remains close to the skin. The composition maintains botanical depth throughout, with the green and earthy elements providing structure and nuance from opening through the final hours of wear.
Cultural impact
Rain Splash 2016 served as a limited re-release, bringing back the 2006 original within the Splash Collection. This return addressed continued appreciation for one of the line's quieter entries. Following its discontinuation, fragrance communities began actively hunting for the scent, exchanging requests for dupes and expressing hope for future releases. The appreciation developed organically among those who valued its understated aquatic character, representing genuine affection rather than manufactured hype.
