The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Philippe Di Méo gave perfumer Nadège Le Garlantezec a challenge: create a fruit that reflected the spirit of Liquides Imaginaires. Not sweet. Not girlish. Not the fig you find in every boutique. Something audacious and mystical, matching the house's identity. The result was Île Pourpre, named for an unknown island where solitary passion becomes an escape from reality. The 2016 release brought that concept to life through a composition that refuses to play it safe.
The unusual move here is taking fig dark rather than sweet. Paired with davana and fenugreek, the heart reads as complex and unconventional, neither straightforwardly fruity nor herbal. Davana brings an almost wine-like fermented quality that elevates the fig beyond simple fruit notes, while fenugreek adds a subtle spice that makes the composition feel more grounded. The ambroxan-cashmeran base adds warmth without sweetness, and cedarwood-patchouli keep the drydown woody and substantial rather than light. It's a fig fragrance for people who don't usually like fig fragrances.
The evolution
The opening hits fast: ginger's clean heat, bergamot's citrus lift, shiso's herbal green. Angelica seed adds a slightly bitter, umami-like quality that grounds the burst. Not harsh. Not sharp. Just immediate and sustained. The citrus from bergamot cuts through the herbal elements, creating a sparkling quality that feels both modern and grounded. Ginger provides warmth that builds gently rather than exploding, giving the opening a controlled energy that stays with you through the first hour. The heart phase shifts the energy. Black fig arrives darker than expected, absorbing the preceding notes into something unified. Davana brings a fermented, wine-like quality that sets this apart from conventional fruity fragrances. Fenugreek and iris add a powdery warmth that doesn't fight the fruit.
Cultural impact
Île Pourpre has maintained steady production since its 2016 launch, finding its audience among those who appreciate fig's richness combined with aromatic herbs and a clean woody drydown. The fragrance occupies a space that is less common than mainstream fruity offerings, appealing to wearers who value complexity and depth in their scents. Its sustained presence in the market speaks to a loyal following that continues to discover and embrace its distinctive character.
