The beginning
La Vie Est Belle Glitter is a shimmering variation on Lancôme's signature iris-patchouli gourmand, a composition that has become one of the most recognizable in modern French perfumery. The formula brought together three of the most respected noses working: Olivier Polge, Dominique Ropion, and Anne Flipo. Three perfumers on a single project is unusual at this level, and the credit list reads like a roll call of contemporary French perfumery's most precise technical voices. Each nose arrived with a distinct approach, and the resulting composition carries traces of all three sensibilities.
What makes this composition structurally interesting is the iris-praline axis running through the center. Iris pallida brings a powdery, rooty coolness that anchors the formula, while praline delivers the toasted-nut warmth that gives the whole thing its gourmand register without tipping into candy territory. Patchouli underneath grounds the sweetness in something earthy, and tonka bean rounds the base with its almond-vanilla shadow.
The evolution
The opening is bright and almost crisp. Pear gives a green-juicy sweetness, blackcurrant adds a tart berry sharpness underneath, and the whole thing reads lighter than it actually is.
