The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Patchouli Canelle arrived in 2021 from Emilie Bouge, the house perfumer at La Closerie des Parfums. Bouge selected patchouli as the centerpiece and paired it with cinnamon, the queen of spices, as the brand describes her, building the rest of the composition around that central tension. The result is a fragrance built around clarity and intention, where each layer has a role to play. Patchouli provides an earthy, complex foundation, while cinnamon brings a warm, aromatic presence that defines the overall character. The interplay between these two elements shapes the fragrance from opening to drydown, creating something that feels cohesive and purposeful.
The structure is deliberate in its balance. Top notes of frankincense and myrrh absolute give the opening a balsamic coolness that prevents the cinnamon from reading as sweet. Bergamot adds a brief citrus clarity, the kind that makes you lean in before the warmth takes over. The heart of cinnamon, clove, and rose introduces floral support at exactly the point where the spices risk overwhelming, and sandalwood bridges the transition to the base without ever letting the composition become linear. Patchouli and vanilla together is a known move, but here the vanilla is restrained, a warmth rather than a cloud.
The evolution
The opening phase introduces a brief citrus clarity from bergamot before frankincense and myrrh assert themselves, establishing a resinous presence. Cinnamon rises through this backdrop, warm and increasingly present as the top notes begin to settle. The heart phase forms the longest portion of the wear, where clove contributes a sharp, spiced depth and sandalwood adds a creamy, smooth quality beneath the spices. Rose appears within this phase, offering a subtle floral element that complements rather than dominates the composition. As the heart begins to transition, patchouli emerges as a grounding presence, growing more defined as the spices gradually recede. Cedar and ambergris support this foundation, adding their own dimensions to the drydown. Vanilla arrives as the final layer settles, bringing a warm quality that blends with the remaining notes.
Cultural impact
Patchouli Canelle is a warm, woody, spicy fragrance from La Closerie des Parfums, fitting within a collection organized around single-botanical themes. Since its 2021 launch, it has attracted wearers who appreciate patchouli in its richer, more resinous expressions. The house maintains a focused approach to fragrance creation, releasing a curated selection of scents each year that explore specific botanical concepts. Patchouli Canelle represents one of these explorations, building its composition around patchouli as the central botanical while incorporating complementary spice and wood notes.
