The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
L'Erbolario, founded in 1978 in Lodi, has spent decades weaving botanical tradition into contemporary perfumery. Camelia arrived in 2014 as the house celebrated the camellia, a flower laden with meaning in Chinese tradition where it symbolizes devotion and enduring affection. Rather than recreating a literal garden camellia, the perfumer translated the flower's emotional resonance into a scent narrative built around elemi, bitter orange, and rose for the opening, creating a bright, resinous introduction that mirrors the camellia's crisp petals. The heart centers on actual camellia alongside geranium, a botanical cousin that shares the flower's green, slightly spiced character.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy: elemi resin and bitter orange create an opening that honors the camellia's crisp freshness, while rose nods to the flower itself. Tonka bean and vanilla function as a bridge between the floral heart and the woody base, ensuring no jarring transitions. The inclusion of camellia as an actual fragrance note rather than a marketing concept demonstrates L'Erbolario's commitment to botanical authenticity, while cedarwood and benzoin ground the composition in classic perfumery traditions. This pairing creates a fragrance that feels both modern and timeless.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with a controlled explosion of citrus and resin. Elemi resin provides a warm, citrusy-balsamic quality that softens the sharp edges of bitter orange, while rose adds a fleeting floral sweetness that prevents the opening from becoming purely acidic. As the top notes soften, camellia emerges with its distinctive waxy, almost transparent floral character, sweetened by tonka bean and grounded by geranium's green, slightly peppery presence. This heart phase feels intimate rather than loud, a botanical whisper rather than a shout. The drydown transitions into amber warmth where cedarwood introduces dry, complex woody depth, and benzoin adds resinous richness. Vanilla extends the comforting tonka sweetness, ensuring the final hours feel wrapped in soft warmth.
Cultural impact
Wearers often describe Camelia as the scent of a sun‑lit garden after a gentle rain, noting its balanced blend of citrus brightness and warm amber depth. It has become a quiet favorite among those who appreciate classic floral‑oriental compositions without the heaviness of richer oud‑based scents, earning steady compliments in both casual and formal settings.
