The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Conceived in 2021, A Drop d'Issey reflects Issey Miyake's fascination with water as a pure, moving element. Perfumer Ane Ayo translated that concept into a single droplet, beginning with the soft cream of almond milk and the crisp elegance of damask rose. The fragrance captures the idea of a single, perfect moment of stillness, where water and air meet without friction.
Ane Ayo's note philosophy centers on contrast without conflict. The creamy almond milk and vanillin in the base create comfort, while the star anise and ambroxan introduce tension. Lilac and jasmine bridge these two impulses, their floral language universal enough to unify the composition. The result is a fragrance that feels both intimate and expansive, like water taking the shape of its container.
The evolution
The opening unfolds like a mist dispersing, almond milk coating the skin with warmth before damask rose and orange blossom lift the composition upward. As the top notes recede, lilac and jasmine emerge in the heart, their green-floral character bringing the freshness of a garden after rain. Star anise lingers as a subtle accent, a whisper of spice that adds intrigue without dominating. The drydown marks the final stage of the droplet's journey, ambroxan and musk creating a second-skin effect while cedarwood and vanillin provide quiet structure and residual sweetness.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, A Drop d'Issey has resonated with fans of the brand's water-inspired lineage. The composition opens with the creamy warmth of almond milk before the florals take center stage, creating a fresh yet Intimate character that feels both modern and timeless. Wearers describe a fragrance that moves seamlessly from daytime professionalism to evening softness, with a soft, close-worn quality that leaves a subtle impression without overwhelming the room.
