The beginning
Fusion d'Issey arrived in 2020, composed by Nathalie Lorson. The name says it all: this is a fragrance about fusion, about contrast. Fire meeting stone. Heat meeting cold. Volcanic energy became the answer. Not the gentleness of water, not the purity of air. The raw, elemental power of what happens when the earth itself decides to speak. The composition captures that volcanic force through a striking interplay of warm and cool notes, translating geological intensity into something that feels alive and dynamic on the skin. The juxtaposition of creamy coconut milk against mineral depth creates the kind of tension that makes the fragrance compelling from first spray to final drydown.
What makes this work is how the top and base pull in opposite directions. Coconut milk and fig nectar are creamy, almost lush. The base is mineral, volcanic, anchored by ambroxan. That contradiction is the whole point. Ambroxan carries a mineral saltiness that reads as heat memory rather than warmth itself. Like standing near cooling lava. The memory of fire, not the fire. Paired with patchouli and warm woods, it creates a drydown that feels geological rather than sweet. The coconut milk does not disappear entirely.
The evolution
The opening hits bright. Lemon citrus cuts through the coconut milk immediately, creating an almost contradictory first impression. Creamy and sharp at the same time. Fig nectar adds a syrupy sweetness that rounds the edges. The cool, refreshing quality dominates the initial phase before the heart arrives. Rosemary and geranium take over with an almost medicinal coolness. The cardamom is there, warming but restrained. The contrast between the cool top and the warming heart mirrors the volcanic concept. Then the mineral depth of ambroxan starts to surface. Patchouli and warm woods build underneath.
