Why it exists.
The beginning
Nathalie Lorson built Fusion d'Issey around a single tension: the heat of volcanic eruption against the cool clarity of mineral. Working from Issey Miyake's Tokyo studio, which has long championed reduction as a design philosophy, Lorson stripped fragrance to its essential materials. Rather than relying on traditional naturals, she leaned into synthetic ambroxan to achieve that crystalline, slightly salty mineral character that feels like cooled volcanic stone. The brief was clear, create something elemental.
The note philosophy here centers on contrast. Coconut water and fig nectar provide an almost dew-like freshness that sets up the eucalyptus-cool heart perfectly. The choice of ambroxan as the dominant drydown note reflects a commitment to mineral modernity, that slightly salty, crystalline character that reads as both cool and ancient. Patchouli provides the necessary grounding while salicylate bridges the fresh and the warm. The result is a fragrance where opposing elements do not compete but rather amplify each other.
