The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Black Rose is built around three roses, Moroccan, Taif, and Rose Otto, layered to form a heart that refuses to stay still. The cumin in the opening adds warmth and presence, giving the floral an edge that feels inhabited rather than ornamental. The composition moves from a sharp, metallic opening through to a warm, resinous base that lingers close to the skin, with the tension between spice and rose carrying through each phase.
The rose appears in two positions, top and heart, in different forms. The Rose Otto is present in the opening, while the Moroccan and Taif roses appear in the heart. The cumin is present from the first spray, persists through the heart, and only fully releases in the drydown when the frankincense and sandalwood take over. The saffron adds warmth to the composition, and the layering creates a fragrance that holds together as it develops.
The evolution
The opening arrives with black pepper and cumin, warm and with an edge that gives the fragrance its character. The roses don't wait their turn. The Rose Otto pushes through the spices within minutes, softening the edge without erasing it. The heart is where the composition earns its name. Moroccan and Taif rose settle in, warmed by saffron. The cumin doesn't disappear, it remains present, acting as a grounding element that keeps the rose from floating away. This is the fragrance's longest phase. By the drydown, the roses have receded into the background. What remains is frankincense, resinous, slightly smoky, and sandalwood, creamy and warm. The cumin lingers as a warmth close to the skin, while the sandalwood and frankincense provide a base that extends the wear.
Cultural impact
Black Rose occupies an unusual position in the niche landscape, a rose fragrance that refuses to be delicate. The presence of cumin in the top notes makes it immediately distinctive, offering a different take on rose-centered compositions. Wearers who connect with it tend to connect deeply, finding in the fragrance something that stands apart from more conventional approaches. The fragrance fits within the house's broader body of work, notable for making a bold statement about what a rose can be when paired with warm, animalic elements.
