The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Gabar set out to capture the feeling of being rooted, of standing on solid ground while the world shifts around you. No. II Ground, launched in 2021, translates that concept into scent, drawing on the Burmese idea of earth as a living memory. Perfumer Ruth Mastenbroek blended pink pepper, saffron, ginger, and coriander to create an opening that sparks and settles quickly, mirroring how quickly life can change. The choice of orris root and fig in the heart represents the soft middle ground, the moments between extremes, while the drydown anchors everything with Burmese thanaka wood, guaiac wood, sandalwood, and a quiet oud note, creating a base that feels like returning home.
Ruth Mastenbroek built No. II Ground around the idea of earth as memory, which explains the heavy reliance on woody and earthy materials in the base. The thanaka wood and guaiac wood evoke Burmese tradition, while sandalwood and oud stretch the composition toward something more universally grounding. The fig and orris in the heart exist to soften the transition from the spicy opening to the woody base, creating a logical, inevitable arc that feels intentional rather than accidental. The result is a fragrance that rewards patience, unfolding slowly and never rushing toward any single moment.
The evolution
The journey begins with the bright clarity of pink pepper and saffron, softened by ginger and coriander into something that feels both energetic and controlled. Within minutes, the heart opens with orris root bringing a powdery, almost velvety quality, while fig adds a gentle sweetness that keeps the transition from becoming jarring. Cedarwood steps in as a quiet bridge, its woody presence guiding the wearer from the lively opening toward the deeper base. As hours pass, thanaka wood and guaiac wood take over, grounding the wearer in their layered, smoky warmth. Sandalwood lends its creamy depth, vetiver adds its earthy character, and patchouli finishes with a faintly bitter, organic finish. A subtle hint of oud and musk lingers at the edges, making the final hours feel intimate without ever becoming overwhelming.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, No. II Ground has become a winter favorite among niche collectors, praised for its elegant balance of spice and deep wood. Wearers often cite its ability to feel both Intimate and assertive, making it a go‑to scent for evenings when a subtle statement is desired.
