The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Back to Black arrived in 2021 as a unisex fragrance from Fratelli Diamanti. Its name points toward black as an intensity rather than a literal color story: deep, polished and deliberately somber. The composition places rose, saffron and raspberry in opposition to oud, leather, patchouli and the mineral warmth of ambergris. That tension gives the scent its character. It does not sit politely at one end of the spectrum, either floral and opulent or dark and animalic, but keeps moving between the two, catching light before settling into shadow. On skin, the opening fruit and spice bring a bright, textured edge, while rose adds a soft floral center. As the scent develops, leather, oud and patchouli deepen the dry, smoky-looking structure, with ambergris lending a subtle mineral warmth.
The unusual part is how the fruit and floral notes behave inside such a dark structure. Raspberry adds a bright, juicy edge to saffron and rose, while leather makes the heart feel less decorative and more tactile. Cypriol oil, also known as nagarmotha, brings a dry earthy texture that sharpens the composition. The base of oud, ambergris and labdanum then gives it weight and warmth. What emerges is less a simple sweet-and-smoky fragrance than a study in contrast, with polished surfaces and darker materials pressed together.
The evolution
It begins with a controlled flash: raspberry gives the opening a glossy red fruitiness, rose brings a soft floral edge and saffron lays down warm spice. Those brighter notes gradually give way to cyriol oil, patchouli and leather. The heart is less about sweetness than texture, with dry earth and supple dark material taking over. As the fragrance settles, oud becomes the anchor, supported by ambergris and labdanum. The final impression is warm, shadowed and quietly sensual. On skin, the bright opening recedes while the leather, oud and ambergris linger as a darker signature, leaving a polished trace rather than a loud one.
Cultural impact
Back to Black is defined by the tension between luminous floral notes and a deep, dark foundation. Rose, saffron and raspberry introduce brightness, fruit and spice, while oud, leather and patchouli create a denser trail with a smoky, mineral edge. Ambergris softens that darkness with warmth. The composition is built to be discovered gradually, shifting from a polished opening into a more shadowed and textured drydown without losing the movement between its contrasting notes.
The House
Fratelli DiamantiFratelli Diamanti is an Italian-named fragrance house founded by Ceyhan and Erhan Elmas, brothers whose work places scent at the meeting point of Italian perfumery and Middle Eastern fragrance culture. The brand presents a broad collection of niche perfumes, including Al Cielo, Royal Oud, Reborn Rose, Sha'mamia, Ten Miles, Shades of Grey, Florence, Al Mare, Al Vento and Montecristo. Its catalogue moves between oud-led compositions, floral names, atmospheric scents and references to place and travel. Public descriptions identify the house with extrait de parfum, giving the collection a clear identity within concentrated fragrance. Fratelli Diamanti also developed the Diamond Collection, a 15-fragrance series reported to include Montecristo, one of the house’s most discussed releases.
The Creator
Ceyhan ElmasHis signature rests in the amber family, a category that rewards patience and depth over immediate brightness. Resins, balms, and base materials take center stage in his compositions, building around warmth rather than sparkle.
