The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Filippo Sorcinelli named it Cena con Assenza, Italian for dinner without presence, supper without the guest. There's something liturgical about the title and the perfumer leans into that instinct. Cena con Assenza is the 2025 edition of that thesis, a composition built around absence and presence as twin flavors. The fragrance opens with a quiet smoke, the kind that clings to old wood and iron, before releasing a deeply caramelized sweetness that reads somewhere between burnt sugar, resin, and the scorched edges of a pastry left too long in the oven. As the hours pass, that initial austerity softens into something warmer, almost upholstered, like sinking into a worn velvet chair in a room where no one else has sat for years.
What's unusual here is the heart note. Bread, in a niche fragrance, is almost a dare. It nods to the body of Christ in Catholic liturgy, yes, but it also pulls the composition toward something edible, almost domestic. Surrounding it with smoked wood up top and hazelnut at the base lets Sorcinelli build a whole tabletop without ever listing a single spice. The myrrh does the heavy religious lifting; the bread keeps it human.
The evolution
The first spray is a controlled burn. Charred wood and candied lemon arrive together, smoky and sharp, like citrus zest charred over a gas flame. Within ten minutes the lemon recedes and the wood deepens into something less burnt and more baked, as if the oven door just opened. The bread note rises around the twenty-minute mark, almost yeasty and warm, and the myrrh steps in beside it, resinous and faintly medicinal. The middle hour is the conversation between those two: warm dough and ancient incense in the same breath. Then the base takes over, and it takes its time. Fir arrives like a cold draft under a heavy door, crisp and green, while the hazelnut toasts itself slowly in the background. After three or four hours the composition has shed most of its smoke and settled into a close, nutty, faintly resinous warmth that clings to fabric and skin alike. On a sweater the next morning, the hazelnut is still there, quiet and a little sweet, like the last slice of something good no one wanted to take.
Cultural impact
Cena con Assenza arrives as part of the 2025 Christmas Edition, a limited set rather than a standalone release. Wearers compare it to the smell of a wooden warehouse that has, mysteriously, burned down and somehow smells incredible. It's a fragrance for people who treat Advent like a mood and the dinner table like a chapel. The scent opens with a dense, smoky resin that immediately recalls smoldering oak and cooled embers, layered over a dark sweetness that suggests dried fruit soaked in something alcoholic and forgotten.
