The beginning
Summer 20 was composed by Elodie Durande for Ffern's 2020 seasonal cycle, inspired by the scents of a midsummer afternoon in Tuscany. The official description places it in the threshold between late afternoon and early evening, when the light dims and the air begins to cool. Ffern built its identity around the idea that fragrance should rotate with the seasons, not sit on shelves year-round. Summer 20 was the warm-weather chapter of that philosophy, a limited release tied directly to the solstice months. The scent reads as an attempt to bottle a specific atmospheric moment: the stillness after the worst of the day's heat has passed, when citrus groves release their oils and the herbs along a stone wall start to give up their scent.
What's striking is how much citrus Durande packed into the top, seven different sources including bitter orange, key lime zest, and Sicilian lemon, before the composition even starts to build character. Seven sources of citrus in a single opening is a lot to coordinate, and the result reads as a dense, layered burst rather than a single bright idea. Summer 20 keeps the citrus alive across multiple stages, letting galbanum and frankincense add resinous edges before the jasmine sambac and neroli take over the heart.
The evolution
