The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The brand handed that brief to Elodie Durande and François Robert, who built the composition around green mandarin, bitter orange, and petitgrain, the bright citrus and bitter green notes that define the opening, before letting jasmine and basil take over the heart. Vetiver anchors the drydown, earth grounding what might otherwise float away. Released in 2021, giving the fragrance a specific place in time and a story that connects it to the moment of its creation.
What makes Spring 21 stand apart is the way it holds two registers simultaneously. The opening is bright, almost astringent, green mandarin and bitter orange over petitgrain's bitter leaves. The drydown is something else entirely: orange blossom absolute is rich, almost waxy, backed by vetiver's smoky mineral depth. That tension between the sharp green top and the lush, grounded base mirrors the greenhouse itself, glass trapping warmth, plants pushing against it. The jasmine sambac absolute doesn't arrive politely. It stays, layered under basil and neroli, refusing to dissolve into background noise.
The evolution
Spring 21 hits skin and announces itself immediately, green mandarin and bitter orange cutting through with the brightness of cut stems. Petitgrain follows, adding a bitter edge that grounds the citrus. Ginger and pink pepper appear, adding a flicker of warmth that adds complexity without overwhelming. As the citrus begins to soften, jasmine sambac absolute rises, lush and full, supported by basi's herbal green and neroli's bitter floral quality. The bergamot zest amplifies everything. The florals settle into orange blossom absolute, rich and deep, while red cedar adds structure and vetiver delivers its earthy finish. The drydown reads as warm skin and green wood, the vetiver lingering while the cedar provides lasting depth.
Cultural impact
Spring 21 has carved out a distinctive space among fragrance enthusiasts. The green accords and the prominent use of basil and neroli give it an herbal character uncommon in mainstream releases. Wearers gravitate to it for its specificity: it smells like a particular kind of spring, not spring in general. The seasonal model means this one has become sought after, which has increased its appeal among collectors.
