The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Autumn 22 came together in 2022 as Ffern's seasonal release for the season between seasons. The brand handed the brief to perfumer Elodie Durande, and the concept was specific: a misted herb garden at dawn, on the cusp between summer and autumn, the first chill just sharpening the air. Not autumn as people usually wear it. Instead, Durande went looking for that fleeting transitional hour when the garden is still green but the light has changed. Herbs wet with dew. Air that carries a bite. The last of summer's citrus holding on while something cooler settles in underneath. Ffern's model shapes how this fragrance exists. Each season, the house releases a single composition with a clear concept tied to that moment in the calendar.
What makes Autumn 22 unusual is the note selection. The top features Brazilian bitter orange, Calabrian green mandarin, and Israeli grapefruit. Elemi adds a peppery brightness. Petitgrain and ginger sharpen further. The heart is where it gets interesting. Rum, not the sweet cocktail kind, but the bay variety with its clove-cinnamon undertow. That sits alongside Calabrian bergamot peel, plus cardamom, basil, jasmine, and coriander. It's an unusual combination: herbal and spiced, but never heavy. The base pulls it back to earth with black tea, lavender, Virginia cedar, and Haitian vetiver.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are loud. Grapefruit and bitter orange hit immediately, sharp and almost green, with elemi adding a lemony brightness. Petitgrain threads through like a wire. It's bright, almost aggressive, and very much alive on skin. The opening has a raw, just-squeezed quality, the kind of citrus that feels alive on the skin rather than processed. Around the 30-minute mark, things change. The citrus recedes and the aromatics step forward. Cardamom and basil show up, and the rum note makes itself known, warm, clove-edged, not boozy but spiced. There's a moment here where it almost reads like a different fragrance, a kitchen garden in late afternoon rather than the bright opening. The bay rum settles into the composition and introduces a sweet-smoky dimension, while the basil contributes a peppery, slightly sweet herb quality that softens the opening's sharper edges.
Cultural impact
Autumn 22 exists within Ffern's catalogue as a documented response to a specific moment in the calendar, the weeks when late summer gives way to early autumn. The fragrance uses rum, basil, cardamom, and Haitian vetiver among its distinguishing materials, and these choices place it in an aromatic lineage that values green, herbal, and slightly spiced compositions over the heavier, sweeter profiles that often dominate autumn fragrance releases. The green-citrus aromatic character of the composition distinguishes it from the amber, vanilla, and smoke-drenched profiles that define much of autumn's mainstream fragrance vocabulary.
