The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Berries & Cream landed in 2025 as a new release from ESSNCE, a house that works in gourmand and fruity territory. The name promises a dessert, but the composition refuses to deliver one. There's no dairy, no whipped sugar, no vanilla frosting. Instead, the formula pours every ounce of sweetness into the fruit itself, then anchors that fruit in a base of patchouli, oakmoss, cashmeran and woods that would feel at home in a darker, more serious scent. The fruit comes through loud and unapologetic, a layered medley of blackcurrant, strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, tangerine and lemon that reads closer to a basket of ripe berries than to any pastry case. What gives the composition its character is the tension between that syrupy, almost candied top and the earthen foundation waiting beneath.
What makes the structure worth a second look is the decision to strip the gourmand layer almost entirely. The vanilla and amber are present, but they sit in the base alongside patchouli and oakmoss, doing structural work rather than performing as sweetness. That choice reshapes what 'cream' even means in this context. There's no dairy sweetness, no sugar-frosted softness, no marshmallow padding around the fruit. What you get instead is the cream implied by texture, by the way the woods and amber cushion the berries and give them a rounded, almost velvety feel against the skin.
The evolution
The opening is pure fruit, loud and immediate. Blackcurrant and strawberry hit first, joined quickly by blackberry, raspberry, and a thread of tangerine and lemon that keeps the sweetness from collapsing into jam. This is the phase where the scent announces itself, candied, almost like red licorice, with the citrus giving it a brightness that prevents it from feeling heavy. As the composition settles, the berries begin to soften and the heart takes over. Jasmine arrives in small doses, and violet powders things up, giving the fruit a cosmetic, slightly powdery edge. The shift is noticeable; the loud fruit gives way to something quieter and more nuanced, the point where the scent stops being a simple berry impression and starts revealing its architecture. In the later stages, the base is fully in command.
Cultural impact
Berries & Cream arrived in 2025 as a berry-forward composition that treats fruit as a structural ingredient rather than a passing trend. Its mix of blackcurrant, strawberry, blackberry and raspberry over a patchouli and cashmeran base reflects how gourmand territory has been explored beyond simple sweetness. The fruit does the loud work up top, but the composition earns its weight from the darker, more grounded materials underneath. Patchouli, oakmoss, cashmeran and woods anchor the berries in something that reads as serious and considered, closer to a fruited chybre than a candy shop.
