The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cherry has been done. Done sweet, done powdery, done so synthetic it could pass for motor oil in a blind test. ESSNCE looked at the cherry category and saw a gap: where was the cherry that didn't apologize for itself? The answer arrived in 2023. Very Cherry is the brand's experiment in pushing the fruit beyond its comfort zone, pairing it with bitter almond, liqueur accord, and a woody-spicy base that gives the sweetness somewhere to live instead of just evaporating. It's cherry for the curious, built on the premise that nostalgia and surprise aren't opposites.
What makes this pyramid unusual is the cherry acting as both protagonist and supporting character. It appears twice, once in the top notes as something closer to maraschino liqueur, once in the heart as riper fruit. The addition of jasmine sambac adds a waxy, almost indolic depth that fruit florals rarely attempt. Turkish rose keeps the floral side grounded rather than powdery. And the base, cedar, sandalwood, cinnamon, vetiver, builds a woody warmth that prevents the whole thing from reading as dessert. ESSNCE's restraint shows: no padding, no fifty-note pyramid, just cherry doing three different jobs across the wear.
The evolution
The opening arrives immediately. Bitter almond and cherry liqueur hit at once, a sharp, almost medicinal burst that announces presence without asking permission. Within five minutes, the cherry softens from liqueur into something riper. Plum joins, then jasmine sambac begins to bloom, adding a waxy richness that deepens the heart. The transition is smooth, fruit into florals, no gap. By the mid-stage, sandalwood and cedar have arrived, grounding the sweetness with creamy wood. The drydown is where it earns its length. Vetiver and patchouli add an earthy counterpoint that keeps tonka bean and vanilla from becoming cloying. Cinnamon lingers longest, a warm spice that never fully leaves. Cherry appears one more time in the far drydown, a ghost of the opening, before fading into clean cedar and skin.
Cultural impact
Very Cherry landed in a category crowded with cherry fragrances ranging from mass-market sweets to luxury statements. Community reception leans positive, wearers appreciate the bitter almond's edge, the longevity, and the way it avoids the cough-syrup trap that undermines so many cherry scents. The spiced woody drydown has drawn comparisons to warmer-weather evening wear, though the versatility allows for transitions across seasons and occasions. For those exploring beyond mainstream cherry offerings, Very Cherry occupies accessible territory, a committed, well-executed oriental-floral cherry at a price that doesn't require justification.
