The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
ESSNCE approached Vanilla Baby as a laboratory experiment in translating comfort-food analogues into wearable form. The brief was direct: create a fragrance that tastes like dessert without relying on synthetic shortcuts that feel cheap or one-dimensional. Rather than building complexity for its own sake, the house wanted a scent that could evoke a specific, relatable pleasure. The perfumer worked with natural and naturals-aligned materials to achieve a cocoa-vanilla warmth that feels genuine rather than interpolated. Small-batch production allowed for careful calibration of the sugar and spice ratios, ensuring the opening remained playful without devolving into candy excess.
The note philosophy behind Vanilla Baby prioritizes pleasure over innovation. ESSNCE selected each material to serve a specific function: mandarin orange and red berries for brightness, sugar for sweetness amplification, cocoa and vanilla for dessert authenticity, amber and tonka bean for warmth, and musk for skin proximity. The spicy notes exist to prevent the composition from feeling static, adding a subtle complexity that becomes more apparent as the fragrance develops. Pairings were considered carefully: the opening works best with light fabrics and clean skin, while the drydown suits intimate settings where warmth is an asset. The goal was never to create something that demands attention.
The evolution
The opening of mandarin orange and red berries establishes immediate sweetness, setting a tone that is both fruity and confectionery. Sugar amplifies this brightness, creating an effect that reads as edible from the first spray. As the fragrance moves into its heart, cocoa takes over, shifting the composition from fruity to deeply dessert-like. Spicy notes introduce a quiet warmth that prevents the cocoa from feeling flat, adding a subtle complexity that rewards attention. Vanilla appears here as well, bridging the gap between the bright opening and the warm base. The drydown brings amber and tonka bean forward, delivering the honeyed, almost edible warmth that lingers closest to the skin. Musk provides intimacy, while woody notes extend the wear time without dominating the composition.
Cultural impact
Vanilla Baby quickly became a cultural touchstone for the new generation of fragrance lovers seeking a sweet yet sophisticated scent that feels both nostalgic and modern. Its launch in 2024 coincided with a surge in social media discussions about affordable gourmand perfumes, and influencers highlighted its comforting vanilla core paired with bright citrus. The fragrance sparked a wave of user‑generated content, from TikTok unboxings to Instagram flat‑lays, reinforcing its status as a go‑to scent for cozy evenings and casual office wear.
