The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Aurora Vanille came out of ESSNCE's Originals Creator Edition, a series built on collaboration rather than house signature. For this one the brand partnered with Margareta Grääs, a Swedish influencer. The brief was clear: vanilla for those who love vanilla but want something more than just sweetness. Grääs and the ESSNCE team worked toward that goal, shaping the composition together over the development cycle. The result arrived in 2025 as a limited release, vegan-certified, and aimed at a fragrance market that increasingly values restraint and skin-forward scent profiles. The collaboration itself signals something about where the brand is heading: outside voices shaping the final formula, a creative exchange that pulls the creative direction away from any single in-house aesthetic.
What makes the composition interesting is the restraint. The opening is aquatic and lightly spiced, pulling the vanilla into a cooler register before any warmth arrives. Cashmere sits in the heart, adding a soft middle layer between the brisk top and the resinous base. The vanilla absolute stays in the background through the early wear, letting the spice and sea notes carry the introduction. Then the base, built around tonka and sandalwood, keeps the whole composition grounded without tipping into the powdery territory vanilla so often falls into.
The evolution
The opening reads almost oceanic. Aquatic notes and a wisp of spice land cool, almost mineral, and the vanilla is barely there, more suggestion than statement. Then the cashmere steps in and the whole composition shifts temperature. The sea breeze doesn't vanish, it gets folded into something warmer, like the smell of skin after a swim in cool water. From there the vanilla absolute takes over properly, but it never goes full dessert. It's a grown-up vanilla, resinous rather than syrupy, backed by sandalwood's dry creaminess. The drydown is where tonka and musk settle into something quietly intimate, the kind of scent that stays on a sweater overnight and greets you the next morning like an old friend. The progression from cold ocean to warm skin to soft resin is what gives the fragrance its character.
Cultural impact
As part of ESSNCE's Creator Edition, Aurora Vanille reflects the brand's collaborative ethos. Bringing outside voices into the perfumery process rather than relying solely on an in-house nose gives each release a distinct perspective, and the Swedish influence on this particular collaboration shows through in the cooler, more restrained handling of a typically warm note. The aquatic opening and the decision to keep the vanilla dry and resinous rather than syrupy marks this as a different kind of vanilla release within the broader fragrance landscape.
