The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oude Arabique is part of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz's Parfums des Beaux Arts collection. The fragrance takes a different approach from oud compositions that lean heavily into smoky, animalic territory, offering instead a quieter take on agarwood. Where many oud-heavy works can feel dense and forceful, this one pulls toward something softer and more woody. The name points straight at the heart of the composition: an Arabic ode, written in resin and smoke. Hurwitz works on each fragrance with care, building compositions that read like olfactory translations of visual art traditions. Oude Arabique stands as a translation of that idea, a scented piece built around the interplay of wood and resin rather than the louder notes the category is known for.
What defines Oude Arabique is its restraint with agarwood. The oud sits inside a frame of Australian sandalwood, false sandalwood, and Himalayan cedar, three different expressions of the same woody idea, layered for depth. The mastic in the opening introduces a Mediterranean resin note, a less common choice that keeps the incense from drifting into the generic. Australian sandalwood brings a creamy, lactonic warmth, false sandalwood adds a slightly sharper woody edge, and the Himalayan cedar anchors the base with its dry, cool character.
The evolution
The opening belongs to mastic and tolu, and they bring an unexpected sweetness to the first impression. The mastic has a subtle green character, a slightly pine-like resin quality that adds brightness without sharpness, while the tolu contributes a deep, almost confection-like warmth that feels like dark caramel made of tree sap. Then the agarwood arrives, and the sweetness folds inward, replaced by something drier and more meditative. Sandalwood enters and shifts the whole composition toward a creamy, buttery wood, with the false sandalwood adding its own slightly drier counterpoint. The incense note threads through the heart like a single stick smoldering in a corner, never dominating. By hour two, the cedar has settled, and the scent has become deeply skin-close. The tolu returns in the drydown, warm and faintly powdery, and it holds for hours without ever pushing beyond arm's length.
Cultural impact
Oude Arabique occupies a distinctive place within the oud category, offering a quieter, more contemplative take on agarwood. Rather than the louder, more animalic statements that dominate much of the oud landscape, this composition reads as meditative and refined. The fragrance holds particular appeal for those who appreciate the meditative and introspective side of incense-based perfumery. Its emphasis on restraint over statement has made it a notable entry in collections that value nuance and quiet complexity. The fragrance speaks to wearers who seek something less declarative, more contemplative in their scent wardrobe.
