The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bois Étincelants arrived in 2021 as Dawn Spencer Hurwitz's study of autumn light on golden woods. The composition is built around a classical aldehydic woody structure, pairing a retro pink champagne accord with lush white florals, oakwood, tonka bean, and Siam wood. The result feels less like an abstract aromatic sketch and more like a precise moment rendered in color, combining polished sparkle with floral softness, woody depth, and warm, resinous accents. Its character comes from the contrast of bright citrus and champagne notes against a substantial woody base.
Its unusual appeal lies in the collision of celebration and woodland gravity. Aldehydes, bergamot, pink champagne, and white cognac bring a polished, sparkling top. Those bright facets sit alongside rose, jasmine, immortelle, neroli, and champaca, before oakwood, sandalwood, moss, resins, and tonka bean give the fragrance a rich woody foundation. The flowers temper the aldehydic sparkle, while the woods keep the champagne accord from feeling light and frothy. Together, the notes create a composition that balances brightness, floral texture, creamy warmth, and dry wood.
The evolution
The opening lands with a clean, effervescent snap. Aldehydes and bergamot sharpen the air, pink champagne adds a celebratory fizz, and white cognac lends a polished warmth beneath it. Floral notes soon become prominent, arriving as texture rather than a bouquet laid on display: rose and jasmine soften the brightness, while immortelle, orris, champaca, orange blossom, and neroli create a lush, powdery heart. The composition then travels toward wood and earth. Oakwood gives it grain, patchouli and oakmoss bring forest floor depth, and beeswax, benzoin, labdanum, and opoponax add warm, waxy glow. Sandalwood, vetiver, cypress, and cedar keep the base composed. As the fragrance wears, the impression is shaped by the interaction of dry wood, soft spice, creamy tonka, powdery amber, and the lingering floral facets.
Cultural impact
Bois Étincelants is a vintage-style aldehydic woody fragrance with a distinctive combination of notes. The pink champagne accord, floral heart, and richly textured base of woods, mosses, resins, tonka bean, patchouli, and amber materials give the composition its character. The aldehydes and bergamot provide brightness, rose and jasmine add softness, immortelle, orris, champaca, orange blossom, and neroli create a lush center, while oakwood, sandalwood, vetiver, cypress, and cedar establish a polished woody foundation. It is an invitation to explore the contrast between sparkling top notes and a deep, textured dry base.
