The beginning
Suedexcess arrived in 2025 as part of Devertere's first collection, and the name says exactly what it intends. The French niche house frames its work as artistic expression and emotional storytelling, and this one leans straight into the leathery end of that brief. Sofia Bardelli composed it as an exploration of suede pushed past comfortable, an extrait de parfum with presence that announces itself without apology. The composition treats roughness as a feature rather than a flaw, and the suede accord at its center carries the kind of raw, animal warmth that demands attention rather than asking for it. What sets Suedexcess apart is its refusal to sand down the edges.
What makes the structure worth noticing is the contrast at the center. Artemisia, saffron, bergamot, cardamom, and black pepper arrive bright and almost conversational, the kind of opening that suggests something polite is about to happen. Then labdanum, tonka bean, birch tar, and iris pull the whole thing sideways into smoke and resin. The artemisia cuts green and slightly bitter against the citrus, while the saffron lends a leathery warmth before the heart even fully develops. Cardamom adds a cool, almost mentholated snap that keeps the pepper from reading purely hot.
The evolution
Suedexcess begins with a sharp, herbal flash of artemisia and bergamot, cut by the dry heat of saffron and black pepper. The heart softens into birch tar, labdanum, and tonka, smoldering under a dusting of iris. In the base, suede and leather drape over guaiac wood, sandalwood, and oud, settling into a dense, smoky drydown that lingers for hours. The opening reads almost medicinal at first, the artemisia giving it a cool, herbal edge that the bergamot brightens without softening. As the saffron develops, it warms the composition from within, lending a golden, slightly bitter quality that bridges the fresh top into the richer heart. The birch tar arrives gradually, its smoke building in intensity until it becomes the dominant voice of the mid-stage. The iris keeps things from becoming too dense, its powdery coolness threading through the resin and tar like a draft through a closed room.

Suedexcess sits at the leather end of Devertere's lineup, and it reads as a study in how far suede can be pushed before it stops feeling polite. The birch tar here does heavy structural work, anchoring the composition and giving the leather accord its raw, smoky undertone rather than letting it float as a smooth, finished surface.
