Why it exists.
The beginning
Zrinski takes its name from the Zrinski family, a lineage that left a notable mark on Croatian history. When perfumer Tomislav Vrbanec composed this fragrance for Croatian Perfume House, releasing it in 2018 as part of a catalogue rooted in place-based storytelling, the result was a composition that resists easy classification. Rather than leaning on conventional gourmand sweetness or heavy woody conventions, the fragrance gathers wild grass, water lily, violet, saffron, cherry, strawberry, peony, iris, carnation, chestnut, oak, white willow, rose hip, poplar buds, and black elder into a single aromatic statement. Each note carries its own weight, and together they sketch something atmospheric and specific.
What makes this composition distinctive is its unusual base note architecture. Instead of conventional woods like sandalwood or cedar, the drydown leans on chestnut, white willow, oak, poplar buds, black elder, and rose hip, materials that grow wild across the Croatian countryside. The heart pairs cherry and strawberry, an uncommon dual-fruited pairing, with a full floral bouquet of peony, lily of the valley, cyclamen, iris, and carnation. The opening's violet, saffron, grass, water lily, and reed complete a pyramid that reads more like a botanical inventory of a wetland meadow than a conventional fragrance structure.
The evolution
