The Story
Why it exists.
State of Mind arrived in 2017 as a house built around a single premise: fragrance influences mood the way tea does. Each scent in the collection paired with a specific brew, inviting the wearer to pause. Secret of Success was designed to capture the moment of a decision made, the exhale after the yes. Karine Dubreuil Sereni built the composition around a contrast the brand called its defining move: heat against cold, masculine against sensual. Grapefruit at the top, cinnamon at the heart. Tea beneath all of it, grounding the whole thing in something quiet and considered.

The Beginning
State of Mind arrived in 2017 as a house built around a single premise: fragrance influences mood the way tea does. Each scent in the collection paired with a specific brew, inviting the wearer to pause. Secret of Success was designed to capture the moment of a decision made, the exhale after the yes. Karine Dubreuil Sereni built the composition around a contrast the brand called its defining move: heat against cold, masculine against sensual. Grapefruit at the top, cinnamon at the heart. Tea beneath all of it, grounding the whole thing in something quiet and considered.
State of Mind didn't want a safe oriental. They wanted the collision. Cinnamon is a notoriously aggressive top note, it announces itself with force, sometimes at the expense of everything around it. Grapefruit is its opposite: bright, cool, citrus-bitterness that retreats rather than projects. Putting them together is a bet. The rosemary-ylang-ylang heart picks up that tension and carries it forward, shifting the argument from sharp to aromatic, from cold to warm. Then cardamom and oud arrive and settle it, closing the gap between contrast and coherence.
The Evolution
That opening doesn't ease in. Grapefruit surges first, clean and cold, trailing a faint bitter edge into the sencha underneath, green, delicate, almost barely there. Then the cinnamon crashes. Within seconds. A bright-warm collision that doesn't blend so much as argue. By the second hour, the dispute has cooled. Ylang-ylang sweetens what was sharp, rosemary pushes back with something herbal and grounding, and the whole thing leans quieter. The drydown doesn't arrive so much as settle. Cardamom and oud carry the warmth forward into something that rounds darker and deeper, the vanilla arrives close to skin, warm and resinous, and the whole thing lingers. Eight to ten hours. Moderate sillage, but it doesn't need to fill the room. It wants to stay close.
Cultural Impact
State of Mind carved a niche as the house that takes fragrance seriously as emotional navigation. Secret of Success has drawn a loyal following among people who want their scent to mean something, not just smell good, but mark a moment. The hot-cold contrast it plays on is a recognizable signature within that lineup, and the fragrance rewards those willing to lean into its opening rather than wait for something gentler.
