The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
State Of Mind's Universes collection asks a question with each fragrance: what does this mental state smell like? Spontaneous Generosity, created by Karine Dubreuil-Sereni and released in 2017, posed the question to a perfumer who understood that true generosity isn't performative. It's the act of giving without keeping score. The name captures something rare, generosity as instinct, not strategy. Dubreuil-Sereni built the composition around that idea of effortless warmth: fig's natural sweetness, tonka bean's embrace, the kind of comfort that doesn't need acknowledgment. The black tea gives it pause. The rest gives itself away.
Black tea as a top note is uncommon in Western perfumery. Most fragrances that feature tea use green tea, or treat it as a background accord. Here, the Assam tea opens sharp and almost astringent, a brief clarity before the sweetness arrives. That tension between restraint and indulgence is the engine of the whole composition. The tonka bean doesn't arrive all at once. It builds slowly, blending with fig's milky quality and the jammy sweetness of cherry in the base. What could have been a straightforward gourmand becomes something with more dimension: sweet, yes, but with a quiet sophistication that rewards patience.
The evolution
The black tea hits first, brisk, slightly bitter, almost medicinal in its clarity. Within minutes, fig's milky sweetness softens everything. The tonka bean doesn't rush. It arrives quietly, blending the fig's freshness with its own creamy warmth. By the 30-minute mark, the tea has receded and the heart takes over: benzoin and Peru balsam add resinous softness, coumarin brings a hay-like sweetness, and a whisper of rose keeps it from becoming too heavy. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name. Cherry and caramel arrive together, sticky, jammy, almost edible. But the sandalwood catches them before they fall off the edge, adding creamy woodiness that keeps everything grounded. Eight to ten hours later, you're still catching traces of it on your wrist.
Cultural impact
State Of Mind positioned Spontaneous Generosity as a fragrance of modesty and true happiness, an unusual pitch in a market that favors bold statements. The pairing of black tea with fig and tonka is uncommon enough to stand apart from more conventional gourmand compositions. Enthusiasts regard it as a well-crafted study in restraint, praising the tonka bean quality and the unusual tea opening. The fragrance occupies a specific space: sweet enough to comfort, sophisticated enough to intrigue, and wearable enough to last through a full workday without overwhelming.
