The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dapper landed in 2025 as part of Comporta's Master & Apprentice line, a collaboration with Bertrand Duchaufour. The name says it all: put-together, well-dressed, a person of wit and intention. But the brief took an unexpected turn, inspired by vintage convertibles and the open air of countryside drives. Duchaufour worked with that tension, building a fragrance where aromatic leather meets floral green. That's the official line, and it earns every word. The leather feels substantial and lived-in, grounded by the green notes that keep it from ever feeling like a showroom display. Instead, it carries the depth of something well-worn and considered.
What makes Dapper unusual is the heart. This one introduces a green, almost wild layer midway through. Hyacinth and violet arrive soft and cool, then ozonic notes lift them further, and underneath it all, tar and tomato leaf keep things grounded in something earthy and specific. The result is a fragrance that shifts between the refined and the untamed. Costus is the underappreciated note here, an animalic material that gives the drydown its staying power. White musk appears in the base notes alongside it, contributing to the overall effect.
The evolution
The opening is immediate and bright. Aldehydes lift the citrus, bergamot, grapefruit, green mandarin, and the cucumber-melon adds a mineral, almost spa-water quality that feels fresh without being typical. Thirty minutes in, the heart takes over. Hyacinth and violet arrive cool and floral, but it's the tar and tomato leaf that surprise. Ozonic notes thread through, giving the green heart an atmospheric, almost stormy edge. The leather base arrives quietly, then builds. As the fragrance progresses, the drydown settles into aromatic leather, cade oil, cedarwood, and costus. That final stage on skin is intimate and animalic, close, warm, present. It doesn't disappear. It settles.
Cultural impact
The aromatic leather category has a rich history in perfumery, and Dapper approaches it with a distinctive perspective by centering green, almost agricultural notes alongside the leather. The inclusion of aldehydes and ozonic elements recalls mid-century masculine elegance without being nostalgic. This creates a fragrance that feels both grounded and sophisticated, suggesting something for someone who values craft and intentional composition. The green heart and aromatic leather work together to create something that feels personal and considered, steering clear of generic appeal.
