The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Thierry Wasser created Watt Blue as part of the Watt line by Cofinluxe. The collection included Watt Red, Watt Mauve, Watt Pink, each staking out distinct olfactive territories. Watt Blue settled into woody chypre, green and fresh but with structural ambition. The fragrance offers clarity and coolness in its expression, delivering what its color promises. The composition builds a layered experience, beginning with bright citrus and moving through herbal depths, all while maintaining a sense of composure. The blend achieves a particular kind of presence that feels both intentional and understated, inviting the wearer into its world rather than demanding attention.
The note architecture places mint and rosemary at the structural core, lending the composition its distinctive character. Bergamot opens bright and effervescent, then gracefully hands off to the herbaceous middle where these green notes take center stage. What makes the composition compelling is the tension between cool and warm: mint delivers a crisp, refreshing quality while rosemary brings a warmer, earthier dimension. Cedar contributes woody depth with dry undertones, while oakmoss provides an authentic mossy character that grounds the fragrance.
The evolution
The opening announces citrus and mint with immediate clarity. Bergamot spikes bright for the first moments, then rosemary pushes through with something green and slightly bitter. The mint settles into the middle passage, not cooling anymore but present, serving as a green anchor for the composition. The heart develops quietly: freesia and orange blossom arrive without fanfare, adding a floral softness that seems borrowed from a different fragrance entirely. Rose lingers at the edges of awareness. As the top notes exhaust themselves, the cedar and sandalwood emerge to form the visible architecture of the base. Oakmoss reads true, actual moss, not a simulation. Leather appears as a whisper, warm and close to the skin. The peach that seemed extraneous in the pyramid becomes noticeable here, sweetening the drydown just enough to prevent austerity.
Cultural impact
Watt Blue maintained woody chypre structure, with bergamot and mint over cedar and oakmoss. The fragrance offers something distinctive: a composition that feels contemporary and modern while maintaining traditional grounding. Community comparisons to other fragrances of its era make sense given the structural similarities in fresh-woody construction, but Watt Blue leans more heavily into green and mossy territory. For someone seeking that particular masculine French sensibility captured in certain fragrances, this one preserves elements of that tradition faithfully.
