The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In the stone-walled dairy laboratory that still hums with the quiet of Castle Forbes historic estate in Aberdeenshire, perfumer Andrew French set out to capture a moment of celebration. Castle Forbes, founded in 1996, has always drawn from the unhurried elegance of the Scottish countryside. French wanted to translate the bright burst of clapping into olfactory form, beginning with fruits that snap and sparkle in the opening.
The note progression reflects a philosophy of building outward from skin. The opening notes create immediate impact, the heart sustains interest with tropical richness, and the drydown ensures the fragrance becomes part of the wearer rather than something worn at a distance. Each phase has a distinct purpose: Blackcurrant and Melon grab attention, Mango and Passion Fruit hold it, and Musk with Sandalwood and Vetiver reward staying close.
The evolution
Applause begins with Blackcurrant and Melon, their combined brightness recalling the initial surge of applause in a quiet hall. As this settles, Mango and Passion Fruit emerge, their tropical sweetness deepening the moment like sustained cheering. The addition of Tuberose adds a creaminess that elevates the heart beyond simple fruit, suggesting the emotional weight behind the gesture. The fragrance reaches its final act with Musk, Sandalwood, and Vetiver, a base that grounds the celebration in something intimate and lasting.
Cultural impact
Applause has carved a niche among collectors who appreciate its playful fruit‑to‑wood transition, often mentioned alongside Castle Forbes’ Vetiver (2018) and Sandalwood (2018) as a bright contrast in the house’s portfolio. Its cheerful opening and restrained drydown make it a favorite for those seeking a scent that feels both celebratory and grounded.
