The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Burberry marked its 156th anniversary in 2012 with a collector's piece: 156 bottles, each hand-crafted in Baccarat's French factory and designed by Christopher Bailey. The crystal version of Body wasn't just a new fragrance, it was a celebration of heritage made tangible. Each 45ml bottle carried the same chypre-fruity architecture as the original Body, but with intensified notes of rose essence and warm tonka beans woven throughout. Michel Almairac built the special edition around these precious materials, creating something that felt like a private gift rather than a mass-market release.
What makes this edition different isn't just the bottle, it's the formula underneath. Rose essence and warm tonka beans were layered throughout every stage, intensifying the green absinthe and peach at the top, deepening the heart of iris, rose absolute, and sandalwood, and enriching the base of cashmere, vanilla, and musk. Cashmere wood as a base note is unusual, it adds a woodiness without sharpness, warmth without the weight of oud or cedar. The result is a composition that feels heavier, more seductively close to the skin than the original Body. Powdery, yes. But with more presence in every layer.
The evolution
The opening arrives fruity and slightly herbal, peach bright against the green bite of artemisia. For about twenty minutes, that's the story. Then the hand-off: rose and iris emerge, and the powdery character takes over. This is the phase that defines the fragrance. Cashmere wood and sandalwood create a soft, almost tactile warmth. The drydown is vanilla and tonka bean, but musk keeps everything grounded and intimate rather than sweet. On fabric, expect 6-8 hours. On skin, 4-6 hours with moderate sillage, present close-up, quieter at distance. The next morning, a faint warmth remains. The kind that makes you reach for the bottle again.
Cultural impact
As a limited edition of 156 bottles, Body Crystal Baccarat occupies a particular space: not a fragrance you wear, but one you acquire. The price point placed it firmly in ultra-luxury territory at launch. Community reception is limited given the scarcity, but the original Body line has maintained a steady presence, described as a classic Burberry scent, powdery and elegant. The Baccarat edition represents the apex of that line: more concentrated, more precious, and much harder to find.
