The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Hero collection began in 2021 with a brief that asked for longevity and growth. Aurélien Guichard, the perfumer behind several of Burberry's most distinctive men's fragrances, approached the Parfum as an opportunity to deepen the collection's signature character. Rather than starting fresh, he looked at what had come before and asked how to make it more concentrated without losing the essential spirit. The Parfum represents his answer: take the existing architecture and render it in higher relief, longer lasting, closer to skin. This is a flanker built for endurance rather than reinvention. It shares DNA with its predecessors but performs differently, lasting hours longer and projecting with more restraint.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of controlled intensity. Black pepper opens with enough force to establish presence but recedes before it overwhelms. The heart woods add warmth and complexity without competing for attention. Leather anchors the composition, providing the longevity that distinguishes a Parfum from lighter concentrations. These notes are not random; they form a deliberate arc from bright opening to grounded base, each contributing something essential to the whole. Cypriol, in particular, serves as a bridge, its smoky character connecting the woodsy heart to the leathery base in a way that feels natural rather than constructed.
The evolution
The fragrance opens on black pepper, a note that arrives volatile and bright, lasting only minutes before its character shifts. As that initial spike recedes, cedarwood emerges as the structural backbone of the heart. Amyris softens what could be austere in the wood, adding a creaminess that invites the wearer closer. Cypriol grounds the mid-section with smoky, almost resinous depth, a note that bridges the gap between the bright opening and the darker base. By the time the drydown arrives, leather has taken command. This is not harsh or synthetic leather but something warm and worn, Intimate without being heavy. The Parfum concentration ensures the transition from heart to base happens gradually, each phase bleeding into the next rather than snapping abruptly. What results is a fragrance that feels continuous, a single statement rather than a series of movements.
Cultural impact
The Hero collection launched in 2021 as a statement about masculine ambition, the kind that doesn't need to prove itself. Since then, the line has expanded through flankers, each one a different frequency of the same idea. Hero Parfum, the 2024 addition, takes the collection's core woody-leathery identity and pushes it into Parfum concentration. It's for the person who wants the strongest version of something they already believe in.
